Why private pay for therapy vs. use my insurance?

We at Stories of Hope know that paying out of your pocket for therapy can seem like a burden. We strive to keep our rates as close to the industry standard for our area as possible. With that being said, what are some of the advantages to privately paying for therapy?


One advantage is that you can ensure that your information is being kept confidential. There is no “middle man” who will handle your insurance claim. You do not need to go to a primary care physician to get a referral. Your mental health information will not go on your permanent medical record. There is some peace of mind in knowing that your very personal information is not out there for your insurance company to see.


When you are using your insurance company, depending on your plan, you may have to see your PCP and get a referral to someone who is approved to take your insurance. You have less control over who sees you when going through insurance.

Your therapist is not limited to a certain number of sessions, and to certain modalities (although we use treatments that are evidence-based). There is freedom to seek therapy for as long as you need to.

Commonly, insurance companies will only pay for a certain number of minutes per session, and some limit the amount of hours allowed each week for therapy.


In order for therapy to be covered, MOST in insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis. This can limit the amount of therapy sessions covered, and in addition, some problems that people are facing in life, such as marital problems, personal growth, and stressful life circumstances may not be covered. Private pay provides the opportunity for people seeking treatment to get help without the pressure of their problems being pathologized. This can reduce the stigma that surrounds certain diagnoses.

Once a mental health diagnosis becomes a part of your medical record, it is permanent. That diagnosis follows you and can affect future policies for things such as Life Insurance, and both short and long term disability.


Even though paying out of pocket for therapy is an additional expense, consider how much you would be paying for co-pays, how much your insurance requires you to pay out of pocket before covering services, and how many sessions insurance covers. There are several financial factors to consider. In the long run, choosing private pay may actually end up being less expensive than using insurance. Ask yourself: What am I wiling to pay to gain more peace, to renew my relationships, to not be afraid to step out of the house anymore, to have joy again? $400? 1000?
